This article features something a little different than I usually write about. However, this nature-inspired product is a nice fit because I am heavily involved in tech and keenly interested in growing plants and the outdoors. Peta™, a nature camera that records insects, is described by its maker, Bird Buddy, as a product "designed to capture wonderous moments of nature in your backyard."
“Petal lets nature talk to us,” says CEO Franci Zidar. “It transforms everyday spaces into windows into the world’s hidden beauty, sparking a sense of wonder and inspiring people to care.”
Debuting at CES 2025 and launching as a Kickstarter product in the spring of 2025, Petal is not yet available to consumers. However, I think it's fun to look ahead. For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it is a crowdfunded platform that uses money from the public to fund a product.
As a backer, you receive a "reward" based on your contribution amount. Rewards include the actual product and other perks, such as special edition products and product schwag.
The project creator sets a minimal funding goal for the product to go into production. If the funding goal is not reached, the funds from the public are returned.
There is no gurantee a Kickstarter project creator will deliver on their promise to manufacturer the product. 9% of Kickstarter projects fail to deliver rewards. Invest at your own risk.
A Wireless Camera to Capture Images and Video of Nature
The Wonder Petal (Fig 1) is a camera designed to mimic a flower and includes a bendable stem that can wrap around a branch to secure it in place. An optional solar panel attachment similar in shape to a leaf attaches to the main stem and powers the camera. It is designed to capture up-close images of birds, butterflies, and insects in gardens and natural spaces.

The Petal has a 12-megapixel camera capable of shooting 4K video. It comes with three interchangeable screw-on lenses (Fig. 2), allowing users to switch between wide-angle shots and detailed close-ups. As a photographer, I’m curious about the image quality. In today’s market, 12 megapixels isn’t much! I hope the resolution is high enough for making large prints.

Connected to a phone via the Petal app, users can monitor their surroundings in real time and remotely capture videos or photos. The camera includes AI features designed to help identify insects and birds. We'll see if it can deliver its promise to identify snout-nosed agave weevils or scorpions.
The Wonder Petal is expected to cost between $99 and $250, depending on the accessories included. It is scheduled to ship in late 2025. Based on past trends, it is likely that M4 Factory—the manufacturer of the Bird Buddy—will produce the Wonder Petal at its facility in Woodstock, Illinois.
