Renting an Airbnb in Puerto Peñasco

Renting an Airbnb in Puerto Peñasco, México, has become my go-to whenever I visit. There’s something about staying in a real home that feels more comfortable—and honestly, it’s usually easier on the wallet than booking one of the 85 hotels or condos available according to TripAdvisor.

For the uninitiated, Puerto Peñasco, affectionately known as Rocky Point by gringos, is Arizona's beach town. Only a few hours south of Phoenix, it's where Arizonians go to trade desert dust for ocean breezes and tequila. (Fig 1)

Renting a home on Airbnb gives you access to the whole enchilada. You're not stuck in a tiny condo unit sandwiched between strangers or stuck in an elevator with an over-the-hill cougar in a bikini returning from the beach.

Besides the fact that an Airbnb house offers a bit more room and privacy, I feel good about renting from what I assume is an American or Mexican homeowner who has invested in a beach house and decided to rent it out when they are out of town. As a small business owner myself, I like helping out the "little guy." It just feels right.

Until recently, I assumed most of the vacation homes available for rent on Airbnb were owned by individuals, real people with names and faces. When I stay in someone's home, I make an effort to take extra care of the house as if it were my own. As it turns out, I may have been a bit too idealistic.

A Revelation While in México

A few weeks back, I booked an Airbnb for a weekend fishing trip with four buddies. We divvied up the responsibilities, including booking a charter, procuring a large quantity of cerveza y tequila, and purchasing Mexican vehicle insurance. I got assigned the task of finding a place for us to set up camp. I located a small home off of José López Portillo, a street popular for vacation rentals and named after a former Mexican President known for his economic nationalist policies (sounds familiar, eh?). One morning after we arrived at our home in Puerto Peñasco, I meandered over to a charming coffee shop to grab a cup of café. While walking back to the Airbnb, I crossed paths with a man who introduced himself as Juan. Pointing to a large Spanish-style home across the street from our Airbnb, Juan mentioned that he lived there and was responsible for all the units in the complex where I was staying.

I asked Juan how that was possible, since I thought I was renting from a person named Rob, or at least that was the name associated with the Airbnb listing and the person I had been texting.

Here's where things got interesting. Juan let out a loud chuckle and explained to me that Rob is a property manager based in Phoenix. He did not own the Airbnb where I was staying. Juan went on to say that he was personally responsible for the properties in México, all of which are owned by an American billionaire. The same person, according to Juan, owned several condominium towers in the resort section of Puerto Peñasco off of Blvd. Paseo de la Dura. (Fig 3)

I asked Juan for the name of the "American billionaire", which he politely ignored. Perhaps he did not know the person's name. Maybe he instead only knew the name of the corporate structure that the billionaire controlled. I will never know. What I do know is that Juan's home was significantly larger and of a higher construction standard than the surrounding homes. Either this property too was owned by the "billionaire," or Juan is paid very handsomely.

As Juan climbed into his turn-of-the-century Dodge Caravan, he mentioned that if I needed anything, I should call Rob. He also gave me his personal phone number, which turned out to be a Phoenix, AZ number, not a Mexican number.

I am not the only person who thought that when I booked this particular place on Airbnb, I was actually booking a place that Rob owned. Comments left on Airbnb about the home bear this fact, including: "Had a very nice stay at Rob's place! Nice quiet area. Had no problems at all, and Rob kept in touch with anything I needed. Would definitely book again."

After conducting some research, I discovered that Rob is the manager of an entity named Rocky Point Rentals, which has twelve active listings on Airbnb for homes and condos, including Sonoran Spa, Sonoran Sea, and Sonoran Sun. Both Rob and Juan are listed as team members on the Rocky Point Rentals website.

The story becomes a little more complicated by the fact that Rocky Point Rentals is owned by Kurt Marquez of Laguna Beach, CA, as stated on his LinkedIn page.

My Thoughts on Renting an Airbnb in Puerto Peñasco

To sum things up, the place I rented in Puerto Peñasco is managed by Rob and Juan, who work for Rocky Point Rentals (located in Phoenix, Arizona), a California-based company owned by Kurt Marquez. Who owns the actual home I rented? Maybe it's the billionaire, as Juan suggested.

Perhaps I was a bit naive as to the inner workings of Airbnb. It's not that the platform hid the fact that Rob was managing a fleet of properties under an entity called Rocky Point Rentals. Instead, that information was there, tucked away like the fine print on a three-page rental car agreement, accessible only after several clicks. In my eagerness to book a beach escape, I mistakenly assumed I was renting a house directly from the homeowner.

It turns out the well-oiled machinery of corporate America doesn't stop at the border; it rolls right into Puerto Peñasco. What on the surface seems like a sleepy vacation town, for better or worse, is part of a sprawling multinational business conglomerate.

Did I enjoy my stay in Puerto Peñasco? Absolutely. The weekend was unforgettable, and I'll be back. As for the fishing excursion, it could have been better. Knowing that my rental fee ended up padding the pockets of a billionaire instead of a local investor. That stings. It's like buying a handmade souvenir on the Malecón only to discover that the bottom is stamped 'Made in China.'

Had a memorable (or maybe just plain weird) experience renting an Airbnb in Puerto Peñasco? I'd love to hear your story.
